As a Lead UX Researcher you will collaborate with others in design, research, product management and more to deliver insights for broad customer problems that feed multiple technology teams, as well as lead others to better, more effective intelligence gathering. You'll be part of a centralized design & research team and will work with other design & research leaders on long-term initiatives.
What You’ll Do:
Customer Advocacy - Identifies gaps in customer or situational knowledge and guides others in how to close the gap. Brings attention to both specific research intel as well as relevant broad-based intel and how to leverage it to create the best experience.
Strategic Design Decisioning - Constant diligence on how to connect research activities and findings to driving positive outcomes for customers. Able to course correct or reprioritize if data shows a need.
Asset Development and Production - Skilled in variety of specific research methods (e.g. customer inquiry, kano studies, diary studies, etc.) and can apply the right method to need. Is curious and constantly learning new methods. Able to quickly draft plans and tools (such as interview script) to drive unbiased results. Applies care in dealing with customer data for proper use. Brings new methods to the team they work with that will either increase efficiency in learnings or in understanding customers.
Facilitation Techniques - Partners with designers and others are what research needs are and collaborates to derive the best plan for the need. Offers guidance in terms of proper methods, timelines, and use of data. Facilitates activities that lead to deeper understanding of customer situations in order to drive better designed experiences.
Purposeful use of findings - Quicky and effectively turns data into useful information for teams and ensures insights are understood and used for their work. Appropriately constructs creative ways to aid awareness of customer intel across sets of teams.
Research Methodologies - Utilizes modern research tools (e.g. Qualtrics, user testing, dscout, etc.) with ease and can adapt to tool changes as appropriate.
Level of Formal Education: Advanced degree is not required; however, area of studies include general business, psychology, sociology or similar
Area of Study: Has some training in specific research methods but not necessarily from degree-offering program. May have advanced degree in variety of psychology-related fields.
Years of Experience: 7-9+ years’ experience
Type of Experience: quantitative or qualitative based research, persona development, working with designers
Special Certifications: None required, but bonus if certified in research methods or practices.

Meet Phillip Rumpf, our Retail District Sales Manager in the Salt Lake City UT market. Phillip has been with Office Depot for 5 years now, and in that time, he has quickly advanced through our stores organization as a Customer Service Manager, Assistant Store Manager, Store Manager and now as District Sales Manager.
The path to his current position has been challenging and rewarding and his leadership took the opportunity to develop him and encourage his ambitions along the way. As a Store Manager, Phillip was identified as a high potential leader and was selected for our “Blue Angels” program for leadership development which led to his current DSM role.
