Overview

This position leads the Non-Income Tax team responsible for management of all non-income tax accounting, tax compliance and planning reporting to the VP, Tax.  The non-income tax function includes sales and use tax, business licenses and personal property tax.  Primarily responsibility is around sales tax including Vertex/Avalara system maintenance/development, technical issue resolution, tax compliance and audit management.  Direct reports include Compliance Manager, Exemption Manager and Audit Manager with a staff 12.  The role is responsible for supporting strategic initiatives, creating more effective and efficient processes, and influencing organizational change to adopt more cost effective and efficient ways of working. This position has responsibility for leadership, process improvements, non-income tax operations, and project management.

There are 4 core areas of responsibility and accountability:

1. Leadership, Coaching, and Alignment – lead team to ensure projects are being delivered timely as required, automations are identified and implemented, and processes are being evaluated for ongoing improvement and simplification.  Staff development and training need to be a continues focus.

2. Continuous Process Improvements – Lead process changes and improvement efforts to drive cost and time reduction and improve quality through process Automation, workflow and other technologies. 

3. Non-Income Tax Operations – Manage SOX processes with internal and external audit teams.  Manage tax calculation programs and customer exemption process to optimize audit results.  Improve stakeholder satisfaction through efficient and timely issue resolution and timely delivery of services.

4. Project Management – Lead company strategic initiatives as tax representative to ensure projects are delivered timely and accurately. Deploy practices to ensure project value is maximized and risks are minimized.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Non-Income Tax compliance, design and direct the sales tax compliance process from accrual to filing and payment. Annual total reporting estimated at $600M per year.  Identify current inefficiencies in the process and implement new processes and tools, including robotics and enhanced data analytics. Manage third party relationship for personal property tax filings.
  • Guides the tax-exempt process for customer facing Tax Exempt group with over 100K customer contacts per year.  Identifies improvements to the overall customer experience through ease of registration by automation and proactive approaches to manage the Company’s audit risk on exemption.
  • Reviews the monthly, quarterly and annual preparation of all non-income tax general ledger accounts and their related budgets.  Investigates variances and reconciles any discrepancies.  Participates in planning and structuring initiatives to manage overall cost to company.
  • Establishes an accurate assessment of the Company’s audit exposure and ensure proper accrual of sufficient reserves.  Aggressively pursue positions during state audits to reduce assessments or realize refund claims.  Standardize the preparation, review and defense of audit requests for the current and future audit cycles. 
  • Lead project to build one single source for all tax decisions across entire omnichannel experience to eliminate redundant systems.  Predict future expansion of system and processes as Company transformation evolves. Engage information systems to ensure the Company’s tax calculation software is accurate and functional. 
  • Review, approve and implement applicable SOX 404 internal controls related to all aspects of the non- income tax compliance functions.
  • Implements/improve process for filing of all required licensing and permits for the Company’s operations.  Ensure continued compliance with changing business needs and expansion into new lines of business.
  • Provide tax advice and customer service to internal business partners by performing the research and analysis to answer their inquiries.  Business partners will include operations, information systems (IT), and other areas of tax.
  • Special projects as assigned including, but not limited to, participation in the further automation of the tax planning, compliance, provision processes, and projects relating to other business initiatives.
  • Train and develop direct reports and their associated teams to improve compliance, proper workpaper techniques, technical knowledge, research skills and strategic thinking.

 

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience in Taxation
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in related field directly related to non-income tax
  • CPA preferred
  • Technical Competencies & Information Systems:
    • Tax research
    • Detailed knowledge of Vertex Tax Return Software desired
    • Working knowledge of Vertex and/or Avalara
    • Oracle and / or SAP knowledge
  • Skills & Abilities:
    • Strong analytical skills
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Comfortable communicating with senior management
    • Strong Excel skills
