*This will be a hybrid position based out of one of the following locations: Boca Raton, FL, Dallas, TX, Atlanta, GA or Chicago, IL

 

The Ocean Transportation Director is responsible for working closely with internal and external partners to develop and deploy ocean transportation strategies including processes for direct imports, carrier management and the landed cost model.

This individual is experienced in maritime freight and knows the ocean carriers, has negotiated contracts, dynamic routing of containers, origin port and destination port selection.

Has a strategic mindset and can devise 3-5 year plans intermingled with day to day execution.

This individual will ensure that internal and external customers receive the highest level of service, makes decisions that maximize the operation’s performance, develops and manages Carrier performance / compliance, logistics network design and partner strategy. He/she is a SME in QBR’s and help drive solutions with sales team.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Partner with Procurement and internal Teams to develop and deploy ocean transportation capabilities, technologies, and business continuity/risk mitigation strategies. Works closely with the Veyer Analytics team driving network design, new programs, cost and service improvements. Understand the dray/ocean interface and total costs in our network.
  • Develop new transportation strategies.  Ensure alignment with other supply chain disciplines, and other internal departments.
  • Hold partners accountable to key process and metrics across the organization’s portfolio of service providers, deploying a common set of KPIs and leveraging analytical data insights to drive cost, service, and quality improvement opportunities.
  • Has the courage to have hard conversations and deliver bad news early in the process.
  • Leverage technology to improve capability and service, provide better integration with reporting, exception management and optimization processes.  Ensure company and vendor compliance with all transportation laws and regulations.
  • Manage and support the periodic sourcing of suppliers and contract / rate negotiation to ensure operating expenses are within budgetary guidelines and appropriate capacity exists to meet demand.
  • Perform reviews of delivery network with internal customers covering Vendor and Carrier performance opportunities.  Work with Vendors and Carriers to maximize proper utilization and reduce transportation costs through optimization activities to drive cost reduction and/or service improvements. Collaborate with internal partners to ensure maximum utilization of backhaul.
  • Support and drive the development and attainment of short and long-range goals and objectives.  Review and analyze activities, costs, operations, and forecast data to determine progress toward stated goals and objectives.
  • Develop expenses and capital budgets, controls, and measurements to monitor progress, including service-level agreements. 
  • Ensure effective and timely communication between the department, DCs, carriers and various internal corporate departments to guarantee coordination of efforts.
  • Keep up to date with current trends (Sulphur fuel impact, new capacity coming on-line, carrier benchmarking, current trends and what other companies’ mitigation strategies) and ensure the broader team understand the importance/impact.

 

Education and Experience:

  • BA/BS degree required; Master’s in Business preferred Business. Also Engineering, Logistics / Supply Chain Management or equivalent
  • Minimum 10 years of transloading, supply chain operations or supply chain planning experience
  • Direct P&L accountability, experience across multiple supply chain disciplines (inventory, transportation, distribution)
  • TMS, Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Knowledge and experience with various software tools (routing, optimization, etc)
  • Ability to work effectively across organizations among suppliers, supply chain, eComm and Retail stores; ability to create strong, trust-based relationships with these constituents.
  • Well-developed analytical skills as it relates to vendors and freight, identification and development of transportation trends, transportation systems operations, and expense control efforts.
  • Ability to persuade and influence others, collaborate, and drive for and attain results.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A champion on new initiatives with an ability to successfully work across different groups and to execute by bridging functional and divisional silos.
