Overview

The Category & Operations Consultant is responsible for being the SME for category management. Will work on new product development and discontinuation process. Be a liaison to vendors and new product evaluations and be a resource for category training to the field. They are also responsible recommending, negotiating, and working with vendors to assist in developing the optimum product portfolio that will enable the sales organization the high propensity for success with their prospective and existing customers. The Category & Operations Consultant will act as a liaison with the CBFS vendor community and the CBFS leadership team to assess new product offering and organize those offerings into a presentable business proposal in an effort to determine feasibility of sales success within the CBFS product offering.  The Category & Operations Consultant will also coordinate the activities of multiple cross-functional teams to complete projects in support of business strategy and objectives including developing a comprehensive sampling and demo program at the lowest possible cost to Office Depot.

Primary/Key Responsibilities

  1. Category expertise – Acts as a consultant source and liaison for the general line selling team to access and inquire how to better sell the category and all product issues and opportunities. Establish processes and opportunities for improvement. Leads and facilitates necessary training.
  2. Vendor liaison – Identifies new products for existing & new vendors, analyzes feasibility and propensity for success within the CBFS product profile and ability to sell to the OD customer base. Conducts line reviews, manage vendor funding programs, reviews the opportunity for sku rationalization and creates and maintains vendor scorecards.
  3. Reporting & Strategic Recommendations - The Category Merchant will present to CBFS leadership on a quarterly basis their recommendations for vendor strategic product opportunities. They will implement sound habits of analysis to gauge the effectiveness of their proposed strategy in relation to overall CBFS strategic goals. The format will be determined by CBFS leadership and the Director of CBFS Services and Operations.
  4. Sample & Demo Program – Responsible for building, maintaining and refining the CBFS sampling and demonstration program for all CBFS selling resources in OD contract sales. The goal of the program is to provide readily available samples and demo equipment to current and prospective customers. They will be provided with the goal of having it funded primarily via our vendor partners and be accessible to all OD contract selling resources within reasonable expectation of equitable revenue return.
  5. Special Projects - The Director of Service & Operations will request the category manager to lead and/or participate in special projects related to their respective area of expertise and responsibility.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Project Management, or Business Administration
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in related field
  • 7 years of CBFS, experience / knowledge preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
  • Solid business and process improvement experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively across Business and Finance, Planning, Marketing, Operations, and other internal teams, lead conversations and influence others.
  • Experience managing and leading cross-functional teams.
  • Experience analyzing and reporting data to identify issues, trends, or exceptions to drive improvement of results and find solutions.
  • Creative problem solver with proven negotiation skill set.
  • Ability to sell vendors regarding placing their service with Office Depot.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to conduct analysis, and make decisions under competing deadlines.
  • Proficient PC skills and ability to effectively operate across multiple merchandising computer applications and programs.
  • Experience interacting at the executive level.
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office:  Excel, Word, PPT.  Cognos and project management software
  • Creative problem solver.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask in a dynamic work environment and manage competing priorities.
  • Highly motivated self-starter with a sense of ownership, a willingness to learn, and a strong desire to succeed.
  • Positive attitude and the ability to change direction on little notice.
  • Experience working in an agile business environment
