The Lead DBA will have full life cycle responsibilities for multiple database technologies.  In this role, one will demonstrate technical expertise while exhibiting outstanding customer service skills. This individual is a critical partner to the application development, infrastructure, and Cloud Engineering teams. The Lead DBA will work closely with these teams to support various design, automation, performance tuning, and cloud migration initiatives. They will also act as a technical leader for a team of offshore DBAs being the primary point in driving standard processes, troubleshooting methodologies, and setting the tone for quality and highly available systems. They will also assist project teams in all phases of a project life cycle, including providing technical analysis / design services to projects through the delivery of recommended design. Strong knowledge of indexes, index management, statistics, integrity checks, configuration, patching, performance, replication issues, connectivity, networking and security.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of Off-Shore DBAs supporting Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle RDBMS, PostGreSQL, MySQL, and NoSQL (e.g. Cassandra, MongoDB, and Couchbase). Provide technical direction, day-to-day priorities of work assignment, and process oversight
  • Demonstratable experience with Automation technologies such as Shell, Ansible, or Terraform and creation of Jenkins pipelines for Cloud environments (i.e. Azure, AWS, OCI). 
  • Implement database solutions that are scalable and architected for high availability
  • Database and SQL Performance Tuning
  • Work with Office Depot management and Product and Technology teams for short- and long-term database planning, technology roadmap creation and operational improvements. Provide security audit reporting for compliance of SOX, PCI, CCPA and PII as required by the specific applications under scope. Develop new procedures to support changes in these governing compliance areas over time.
  • Provide 24/7 support including being a part of an on-call rotation.  Flexibility to build and maintain the schedules with the offshore team members is required. Establishing of daily, weekly, and monthly health checks to ensure optimal operation of IT systems
  • Knowledge and experience working directly with vendors for support escalation and technology advancement.
  • Ensure databases have the correct data protection backup and recovery plans and that these plans are exercised on a regular basis for local restoration needs
  • Execute and support cloning and capacity management for databases under support

Qualifications (Education,Experience and Certifications)

Level of Formal Education: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience

Area of Study: Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or related discipline preferred

Years of Experience: 8+ years as a database administrator, 3+ years in a Project Lead capacity

Type of Experience: Information Technology

Special Certifications:

(CPA, Etc.) MCSE or other DB or Cloud-related certifications preferred but not required. 

Language Skills: English

Technical Competencies:

●          Ability to understand system functionality, process, and architecture at a technical and business level.

●          Ability to juggle large backlogs of work to prioritize the most critical demand and facilitate change with tight deadlines

●          Ability to interact with other departments and business users who are not as technical and be able to explain the nature of the work, the benefit, the risks and how they will be mitigated

●          Experience troubleshooting complex technical issues and providing solutions to restore service and improve on a long term basis through detailed root cause analysis

Information Systems:

High or expert knowledge with the following database technologies:

●          Microsoft SQL Server

●          Oracle RDBMS

●          MySQL

●          PostGreSQL

●          NoSQL

●          Linux or Unix-based systems experience

Some experience or knowledge with:

●          Cloud-native Monitoring solutions

●          Zabbix

Personal Attributes:

●          Self-motivated, proactive and advocate of continuous learning and improvement

●          Quick learner, adaptive, and ability to develop an understanding of new information systems and processes

●          Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision

●          Capable of working in a team environment with multiple differing personalities and backgrounds, always acting professionally and treating team members with respect
