Overview

The Sr. Merchandise Planner partners with Sr. Merchants, Merchants, Demand Replenishment Planners and cross functionally across the company to develop and manage comprehensive business strategies to drive sales, optimize inventory investment, and generate profit.  He/she is responsible for financial planning and forecasting, managing Open-to-Buy, and performing analysis to support the sales plan.  The Merchandise Planner also provides strategic direction for the management of inventory including purchasing and allocation strategies for assigned area of responsibility in support of financial goals.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Develop and execute department and class level plans and forecasts across all business channels in both dollars and units by week for sales, receipts, inventory, gross profit, and inventory turn for the assigned area of responsibility.

2. Prepare and manage the department/class level Open-to-Buy to ensure optimal performance is achieved by month, quarter, and season, while managing to plan goals.

3. Act as advisor to Merchants utilizing data and analytical reasoning to measurably impact operational results and strategies.  Analytic responsibilities include:

a. Preparation of weekly and monthly reviews and diagnostics to aide in the reforecasting (pre-season, in-season, and post season) of sales, margin and inventory
b. Proactive monitoring and reporting of industry and competitive activity
c. Monitoring of business channel trends 
d. Development of ad-hoc and standard reporting as necessary to solve critical business issues and provide insight on initiatives, strategies and opportunities
 
4. Reconcile item plans, merchandise financial plan, and assortment plan, updating as appropriate.

5. Create and direct the purchasing and allocation strategy for area of responsibility in support of financial and assortment plans and ensure consistency and accuracy of allocation analysis and tactical actions.

6. Partner with Merchant teams on creating strategic assortment plans and key item plans.

7. Develop product lifecycle plans including exit strategies to maximize profitability.

 

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent training and experience; Master’s Degree preferred
• 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in business, planning, allocation, and/or merchandising.
• Established professional with broad business experience in business, planning, allocation, inventory management and/or merchandising.
• Proven ability to think strategically and perform complex modeling and analysis.  Experience working in a large, matrixed organization.
• Related advanced certification
• Strong knowledge of Financial Systems and Reporting and Processes
• Knowledge of inventory management and Supply Chain
• SQL, Hyperion Planning, JDA-Enterprise Planning or other planning system’s experience is a plus
• Has credibility and personal strength to both partner with and challenge decisions
• Ability to express opinions and the courage to express them in the face of resistance
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with strength to succinctly convey message content at all levels of the organization
• Ability to interact with Senior Management and influence decisions
• Solid presentation skills
• Ability to quickly learn new applications
• Ability to influence without authority to drive retail profitability and inventory productivity
• Readily grasps financial concepts and interprets financial information accurately
• Ability to reason mathematically and analytically to drive business
• Exhibit high standards and accountability; takes pride in accuracy
• Proven ability and desire to provide strategic planning direction and identify growth opportunities
• Results-oriented and self-motivated with a strong sense of urgency and bias for action
• Able to independently organize and prioritize broad workload to meet deadlines
