Overview
The Senior Lead Ontologist is accountable for defining, creating, and managing various taxonomies and their relationships, to classify all products and services supporting a new strategic B2B initiative.
He/she must conduct a range of research and analysis to isolate the characteristics of, and then specify, each product and service category in the development of the master taxonomy and its attribute metadata. Additionally, they will also define the classification rules which drive the procurement policies and buying experiences.
The master taxonomy will undergo continuous enhancement and refinement based on the expansion into new categories under their supervision. He/she must map and maintain the relationships between procurement/buying taxonomies and with established industry-standard hierarchies such as UNSPSC & eClass.
He/she, consulting with leadership, will prioritize category taxonomy classification and mapping activities and provide direction to other ontologists.
Primary Responsibilities:
1.
Execute comprehensive analysis; competitive, comparative, internal & user research, to uniquely define categories, subcategories and the metadata used during the collection and presentation of item information throughout B-Comm.
2.
Create and maintain master taxonomies and relevant metadata for the taxonomy used to classify all products/services created by suppliers and other item data contributors; as well as the taxonomy that drives the discovery experience for the buyers within the various marketplaces. Identify and create the item metadata such as attributes & validation rules; setting the standard for each taxonomy node, ensuring data accuracy to our partner base.
3.
Establish and maintain mapping of the master taxonomies to ensure operators, item data contributors such as suppliers, and buying partners are presented items in an efficient, organized, and logical manner.
4.
Curation/refinement of master taxonomy & metadata, attributes & values, based on machine learning activity during contributor file processing.
5.
Enables governance during data collection from item file contributors by maintaining mappings of various global taxonomy standards to the master taxonomy, such as UNSPSC to the classification taxonomy.
6.
Lead, manage team by identifying opportunities, KPIs and other internal measurements to deliver upon commitments, improve quality, optimize processes and systems to drive operational effectiveness.
7.
Consulting with B-Comm leaders, sets the priority for mapping activities by assessing the organizational and customer implications of expansion into new categories to ensure consistency and optimized partner experience.
8.
Define and document processes used by the Ontology Team to create and maintain classifications, metadata, and mappings.
Education & Experience
Level of Formal Education:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or equivalent experience
Area of Study:
Library Science, Information Science, Computer Science
Years of Experience:
Minimum 7 years’ experience in related field
Type of Experience:
•
Modelling large data sets and data repositories
•
Experience in eCommerce, B2B, internet direct marketing or e-Procurement environment.
Language Skills:
•
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Technical Competencies:
•
Knowledge of data governance practices, business and technology issues related to management of enterprise product information
•
Experience with ontology data formats such as Semantic Web (W3C), Web Ontology Language (OWL) or Resource Description Framework (RDF)
•
Understanding of data ingestion, governance, and publishing
Skills and Ability:
•
Knowledge of planning, designing, and implementing a domain or enterprise knowledge taxonomy, architecting and designing the application of metadata standards, controlled vocabularies and data rules, and establishing information
management best practices
•
Strong background in research and analysis, including the ability to evaluate source authority
•
Solid problem solving and conceptual thinking abilities
•
Ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment
•
Comfortable in technical environments and eager to learn new systems as needed
•
Ability to context switch between systems-level thinking and attention to minute details
•
Time management skills, demonstrated success in handling multiple, sometimes conflicting priorities
