The Lead Systems Engineer (Server Administration) will have responsibilities for multiple Linux technologies, including but not limited to, Red Hat (RHEL), SUSE (SLES), CentOS, and Oracle Linux.  Engineering and Administration duties will span both On-prem and Cloud platforms including AWS, Azure, and Oracle Cloud (OCI).  This individual is a critical partner to the application development, infrastructure, and Cloud Engineering teams, and will assist with the full lifecycle of software development.  This individual will be expected to drive upgrades and rollouts for Operating Systems, Server firmware and integrated technologies such as Authentication Services. 

As a Lead Engineer, this role is expected to make recommendations based upon observations as well as industry standards and best practices.  This position is relied upon to be the subject matter expert in both process, compliance, and technology; serving as mentor to junior engineers (on & offshore), working with Vendors to adopt new and/or enhance existing systems as well as engineering technological solutions which will further improve the delivery of service.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and resolve problems associated with the operating system’s servers, hardware, applications, and software
  • Proactively monitor infrastructure and systems performance, implement and maintain best practices, and ensure compliance with latest Security standards
  • Demonstratable experience with scripting languages such as Shell, Perl, Ansible, Python, and creation of automated pipelines for patching and deploying packages to Cloud environments (i.e. Azure, AWS, OCI)
  • Create and maintain existing service continuity documentation and processes to ensure availability of critical Linux systems to prevent unplanned system outages
  • Work with Development and Engineering teams for short- and long-term infrastructure planning, technology roadmap creation and operational improvements.
  • Provide security audit reporting for compliance of SOX, PCI, CCPA and PII as required by the specific applications under scope. Develop new procedures to support changes in these governing compliance areas over time.
  • Be available on-call for escalations from the offshore team.   
  • Establishment of daily, weekly, and monthly health checks to ensure optimal operation of IT systems
  • Knowledge and experience working directly with vendors for support escalation and technology advancement.

 

Qualifications (Education, Experience and Certifications)

  • Level of Formal Education: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • Area of Study: Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or related discipline preferred
  • Years of Experience: 8+ years as a Linux administrator
  • Special Certifications:
  • Linux and Cloud-related certifications preferred but not required. 
  • Language Skills: English

 

Technical Competencies:

●    Ability to understand system functionality, process, and architecture at a technical and business level.

●   Ability to juggle large backlogs of work to prioritize the most critical demand and facilitate change with tight deadlines

●   Ability to interact with other departments and business users who are not as technical and be able to explain the nature of the work, the benefit, the risks and how they will be mitigated

   Experience troubleshooting complex technical issues and providing solutions to restore service and improve on a long-term basis through detailed root cause analysis

 

Information Systems:

High or expert knowledge with the following Linux technologies:

  • SUSE
  •  RHEL
  • CentOS
  • Oracle Linux

 

Personal Attributes:

●          Self-motivated, proactive and advocate of continuous learning and improvement

●          Quick learner, adaptive, and ability to develop an understanding of new information systems and processes

●          Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision

●          Capable of working in a team environment with multiple differing personalities and backgrounds, always acting professionally and treating team members with respect
